Although Canberra is small and quiet, it has a lot to offer for tourists, both during day and night.

Canberra is the home to many significant national monuments and institutions. As the capital of Australia, it is home to such attractions like the Australian War Memorial, the National Gallery of Australia, the National Portrait Gallery of Australia, the National Archives of Australia, the National Library of Australia and the National Museum of Australia.

More importantly, Canberra has many Commonwealth government buildings that are open to the public, including Parliament House, the High Court of Australia and the Royal Australian Mint.

During times of good weather, tourists may enjoy visiting Lake Burley Griffin. This lake is situated in the middle of Canberra, within the Parliamentary Triangle. On Black Mountain is the Telstra Tower, where you will be able to view panoramic views of Canberra. Down from Lake Burley Griffin is Scrivener Dam, which is where the National Zoo and Aquarium is located. Recently, the National Zoo and Aquarium on Scrivener Dam was renovated and now houses some unique species not seen anywhere else in Australia. For those who enjoy the fauna and flora, the Australian National Botanic Gardens is a great place to visit to see the native plants of Australia. The National Dinosaur Museum and Science Museum (Questacon) are ideal spots for children and families.

Locally, Canberra has much unique heritage buildings in what it has to offer. The essence of Australia’s culture, history and lifestyle is reflected in the museums, galleries and institutions in Canberra. These icons hold and share the hidden treasures of our nation, offering a fascinating insight into Australian character and democratic system, and our journey from an Indigenous continent to a modern nation it is today.

The local Museum and Gallery in the Canberra city is a repository of local history and art.

Canberra Australia offers many activities and entertainment in the form of festivals and historical sites. While in Canberra be sure to visit the historical homes. If you’d like to learn about the European Settlers be sure to stop by Tuggeranong Homestead and Blundell’s Cottage, located in Tuggeranong Valley and Parkes. Another interesting memorial is the Duntroon house, located in Campbell in the vicinity of the War Memorial. The Duntroon house is currently the mess for officers at RMC, and was originally one of the country’s first homesteads. Created in 1920, the house is preserved and is an accurate representation of early Canberra.

Canberra also offers live music and dance, which are popular attractions. If you are interested in seeing a play or maybe going to a concert, be sure to stop by The Canberra Theatre. This is a great place to go with a family, as The Canberra Theatre offers music and plays for people of all ages. If you are interested more in music, visit Llewellyn Hall in the ANU campus. Here, musicians from throughout Canberra and Australia perform their talent. Also located in the Australian National University is The Street Theatre. Students and recreational groups often perform there. If you’re looking to go to a video festival, be sure to go to Tropfest, the largest video festival in Australia. In terms of musical festivals, Stonefest which is located at the University of Canberra is the largest.

For those who enjoy going out to nightclubs and dance, Canberra is home to many bars and pubs which have live entertainment. Most are located around Kingston, Dickson, and also the City. But, if you’re willing to search the surrounding suburbs, you’ll be sure to find cool “hidden” cocktail bars, dance clubs, and also the traditional Australian pubs. These Australian pubs offer beer, live telecasts, and music. If you travel to Garema you will find some of the most stylish cocktail bars. If you’re looking for a more upscale and modern bar, Kingston is where you should look. But note that the areas around Kingston are often a tad pricy.
The events in Canberra are a unique experience, and if you visit during one of them you’re in luck. During March, the Summernats Car Festival, The National Folk Festival, and the Celebrate Canberra Festival coincide with “Canberra Day”. Canberra has something to offer for everyone, even if you are into sports. Canberra’s sporting activities include skate parks, golf courses, tennis courts, and also swimming. Other popular water activities include sailing, rowing, and water skiing, all done in Canberra’s lakes.
